This story is told in order. When you’re ready, you can begin at the first moment I knew something had to change.
The person writing this
My name is Vivian Vale. I am a mother and I work full time in a job that does not let up.
I spent twenty-six years in therapy before anyone got the diagnosis right. Before that it was PTSD, panic disorder, manic depression, anxiety — four labels, none of them the one that fit. They were treating what I did instead of what happened to me.
The correct name is CPTSD.
I can tell you my whole history without feeling any of it. Every professional who watched me do that decided it meant I was fine. It didn’t. It meant I’d been trained. I’ve never had a place safe enough to keep a private journal. So I’m writing this in the open instead.
I’m writing it for my kids, so they’ll have my story in my words and not somebody else’s. And I’m writing it for the one person who reads this and recognizes herself. Know you’re not crazy or noncompliant.
If that’s you: this is not your fault, and you are not broken for functioning.
